Visiting Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House in Plano, IL has been high on my list since learning about it in design school. However we don't have a car in the city, and driving an hour southwest of Chicago was always out of our way on our Michigan wedding road trips. But then we had my coworkers wedding in St. Louis this past weekend and I just about squealed when I saw it was on our way home!
Seeing the house in pictures, I was weary as to whether I would ever live in a home like that - so exposed and simplistic. Having visited it in person now though, I would live there in a heartbeat! It's perfectly designed with a reason for everything, and it feels very spacious because of that. The massive floor to ceiling glass windows look out to the surrounding serene landscape which is extremely private, so you don't feel exposed at all. And any little sliver of sunlight fills the home with the most amazing warm glow. Needless to say, we put in a bid to buy it....just kidding ;) ! I highly recommend a visit if you have any inkling of interest in design.
